The Francophonie is officially present in four states in the Asia-Pacific region, which are members of the OIF : Vanuatu (200,000 inhabitants), Laos (5.4 million), Cambodia (12 million) and Vietnam (80 million) ; two overseas French Republic Territories represented in terms of universities by the Université de la Nouvelle Calédonie and the Université Française du Pacifique.

In Vietnam, there are 178 universities and tertiary institutions, mostly public and multi-disciplinary with more than a million students studying in two major university centres based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cities, as well as in many regional centres.

In Cambodia, there are 9 state universities and 4 private ones with 7,000 students. The University of Laos is represented by the unique National University which has 10 affiliated Colleges with 18,000 students.

Due to historical reasons the French language, which had been widely used for a century in that part of South-East Asia, lost its official status in the early 50s. Despite this breakdown, the French as foreign language is traditionally taught in most of the universities and is ranked second, after English. Teaching in French language reappeared in 1994 with the establishment of bilingual classes and Francophone university streams supported by the AUF.

In the Pacific region, Vanuatu, in which French is one of the three official languages, has steadily implemented Francophone university studies through the AUF centre, as well as in regional affiliated centres. Thus the AUF is also working in cooperation with institutions in the northern part of the country. French is the first foreign language imperatively taught to Anglophone students at the unique University of the South Pacific in Vanuatu. The universities of New Caledonia and French Polynesia are also members of the AUF and take part on the established programmes.

In addition, there are many teams of Francophone scientists and French Studies departments operating in Asian non-Francophone member countries, such as China, South Korea, Japan and Thailand, and in the South Pacific countries like Australia and New Zealand.
